64th Annual Drosophila Research Conference
GSA LOCI is a volunteer-led community service initiative conceived by the GSA Conferences Committee that aims to give back and build a sense of community, especially for early career researchers.
The pilot will be held in conjunction with the 64th Annual Drosophila Research Conference in Chicago. GSA will collaborate with one of the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ organizations, Howard Brown Health, and their Broadway Youth Center, in their ongoing efforts to provide care to the LGBTQ+ community, their families, and allies.
The community service project will be organized immediately prior to #Dros23 on March 1, 2023.
You can contribute in person at #Dros23 or from afar. Here are some ways you can help make a difference!
Help pack hygiene kits at #Dros23
Sign up to assemble hygiene kits for youths ages 12–24 on March 1, 2–4 p.m. at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk. All of the materials will be available at the venue. Sign up by January 17 when you register. A $5 donation is requested to hold your spot. This is a great opportunity to meet people outside of your regular network.
Donate work attire to the clothing drive
Conference attendees can bring their clean, professional clothing (think blazers, khakis, blouses, belts, pants, etc.) for donation to the Broadway Youth Center. There will be a drop off location at the conference registration counter. Just grab a clothing item that you no longer use, pack it in your suitcase and help someone make a great impression as they interview for that important job.
Make a monetary donation
Whether you plan to attend #Dros23 or not, you can still help the LGBTQ+ community of Chicago! Donate through the GSA website and your contribution will go directly to the Broadway Youth Center. Donations will be accepted through March 17, 2023. $10 pays for items to make five hygiene kits.
