Despite the predictability of genetic theory that diploid Helianthus interspecific crosses are expected to produce only diploid progenies, a significant proportion of triploid progeny were observed. Liu et al., pp 1097–1108, discovered that sunflower significantly increases triploid progeny production through reduced incompatibility that consequently increases preferential fertilization of pollen containing slightly increased unreduced male gametes.Image

This award provides up to $1,000 to graduate students and postdocs who wish to attend a conference or enroll in a laboratory course. It is granted in honor of DeLill Nasser, a long-time GSA member and National Science Foundation Program Director.

Early Career Poster Awards

Early Career Poster Awards recognize outstanding research presented at GSA Conferences presented by undergraduate and graduate student members.

GSA Undergraduate Travel Awards

To promote excellence in undergraduate research and education, this travel award grants financial assistance to undergraduate members attending and presenting research at a GSA conference.

James F. Crow Early Career Researcher Award

James F. Crow, whose contributions to the field of genetics were impactful and innumerable, considered his students to be his greatest gift to science. To honor and celebrate his legacy, GSA presents the James F. Crow Early Career Researcher Award to students and recent PhDs.

Presidential Membership Initiative

To be the most vibrant Society that we can be, it is imperative that we attract talented and creative individuals from diverse backgrounds. Diversifying membership is part of the effort to build a thriving scientific enterprise and to create a more equitable and inclusive Society. This program is designed to increase diversity in the Genetics Society of America membership by offering Presidential Membership packages to early career scientists.

The Hugo Bellen and Catherine Tasnier Drosophila Neurogenetics Lecture

The Hugo Bellen and Catherine Tasnier Drosophila Neurogenetics Lecture honors a postdoctoral fellow or assistant professor for exceptional contributions to genetics in Drosophila neuroscience. It supports junior researchers by covering registration and travel costs for the Annual Drosophila Research Conference, where the recipient will present, and includes a cash prize.

Victoria Finnerty Undergraduate Travel Awards

This award, which honors the memory of Drosophila geneticist Victoria Finnerty, was established to support travel costs for undergraduates to attend the Annual Drosophila Research Conference.

Society Awards

Edward Novitski Prize

Named in honor of Drosophila geneticist Edward Novitski, this prize recognizes creativity and intellectual ingenuity in solving problems in genetics research. It honors scientific experimental work—either as a single experimental accomplishment or as a body of work.

Elizabeth W. Jones Award for Excellence in Education

This award, named after renowned geneticist and educator Elizabeth W. Jones, recognizes significant and sustained impact on genetics education. Recipients promote a deeper understanding of genetics through their work at any educational level, from K-12 to graduate school and beyond.

Genetics Society of America Early Career Medal

This award recognizes contributions to the field of genetics by an early-career scientist, honoring those in our community who exemplify the GSA membership through meaningful contributions to modern genetics.

Genetics Society of America Medal

This award recognizes contributions to the field of genetics by a mid-career scientist, honoring those in our community who exemplify the GSA membership through meaningful contributions to modern genetics.

Genetics Society of America Mentorship Award

This award honors an individual member of the Society for excellence in their contributions to the mentorship of geneticists at any career stage.

George W. Beadle Award

This award, named after George W. Beadle, recognizes service to the field of genetics that reaches beyond an exemplary research career.

Rosalind Franklin Young Investigator Award
